Learning to use the cane

Recommended Posts

First off, I think rattan is the ideal material for caning. There is weight, flexibility, durability and tradition that cannot be matched by synthetic materials. I buy canes in bulk on this site for pennies on the cane, I prefer the 3/8" diameter:  https://www.franksupply.com/bamboo/rattan-poles.html#kooboorattan

It has been a while since I ordered, but I could get 15 or 16 canes for about $30 including shipping. Their customer service is great too. Make sure you order them cut into 3' lengths to save on shipping. If you forget, they will probably contact you and ask you (because they know what we do, I guess).

You can correct any warping with a blow dryer and a little pressure. As far as practice goes, there is always one end of the can that flies better when you hold it. You have to test it to see. Don't forget to round the tip with sandpaper and cut them to any length you want. You can practice on a cushion. Do not take practice swings without something for the cane to land on because they can snap like that.

A flick of the wrist is all that is required with a cane. I have read that the tip of a cane travels around 200 mph with a good wrist snap. If you take a big swing, you may hit outside of the target area. If that happens to be the upper thighs, oh well. But if it is the tailbone or lower back that is a different story.

Some people talk about soaking canes. It is not not necessary. I have a favorite cane I have been using for years and it is still intact.

If you don't need 15 canes, they make great Christmas presents.  🎄

Rattan over bamboo, as a wood choice, is essential. Bamboo is worthless from my perspective. Bamboo can split & cause injury. Practice is also essential. Find an object to practice on, a pillow or mattress, clothing on a hanger, Or anything which is able to handle/absorb impact, is perfect for such occasion. I will warm up/practice on a pillow to perfect my aim to the level of confidence if I haven't used the cane in awhile.

@Spanknutt- have you tried the 5/16" size? My smaller cane broke earlier this year and I am looking for a replacement for an OTKane. Is that diameter super flimsy? The 3/8" looks ideal for a bigger cane, could I shape a crooked handle with a heat gun?

When I order from Frank's, not all canes are the same diameter. They are close but definitely some difference so if you order 3/8 some of them will be more like 5/16 (I actually think the thinner ones hurt more). When I cook a handle, I immerse the end of the cane in a pot of hot water (like simmering hot) for about 30 seconds , then wrap it around a small diameter glass and secure if with rubber bands overnight.

Thank you! I will order soon then.

Ohh...the cane...ouch. All I know is...my husband seems to have "mastered" it quite well...and is very "skilled" at laying nice even lines on my backside and thighs as he may desire...lol.

Hope this painful experience will have caused a helpful lesson and the awareness that you will have to feel the cane again if needed will keep you in line.

I think you can learn to use one correctly, but having someone experienced with a cane to demonstrate is a great help and will speed up the learning curve. I know it did for us. Good luck to you.

Get with me. I am experienced.

The cane is definitely one way my husband keeps me in line. It is not something I get regularly, but when I do...it "speaks" volumes to me...lol.

Main point is that your husband has the proper feeling if you are in need of the cane. Besides I can imagine its 'simple availability' will have a hardly undervaluing warning effect on you even if it is not used often.
